Does Google Consider My Website Mobile Friendly?

How can you tell if Google considers your website to be mobile friendly?

You know when you tap on a search result on your mobile phone and you are dropped on a page where the text is too hard to read because it’s too small?  This is the result of a page not being optimized for a mobile phone.

You can check by using your own smartphone, but that doesn’t exactly tell you what Google thinks about your page.

Well, you COULD ask a web designer.  They’d know for sure.  But what if you don’t have a web designer handy at the moment and you just NEED to know?

Just use the tool listed below:

mobile-friendlyGoogle is now marking pages that are mobile friendly.  The change is rolling out globally over the next few weeks with this type of format.  This will make it a lot easier for people to find the information that they’re looking for and that is more suitable for the device that they’re using to perform the search with.

Google sends out a ‘bot’ to quickly crawl your website and check it against the most current form of the search algorithm.  If the following traits are detected, your website will likely be marked as ‘Mobile-friendly’.

  • Avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash
  • Uses text that is readable without zooming
  • Sizes content to the screen so users don’t have to scroll horizontally or zoom
  • Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped
Google has claimed that they are experimenting with using mobile-friendly criteria as a ranking signal.  Our guess is that, if implemented, when people search on mobile phones, mobile-friendly results will be given higher authority over non-mobile-friendly websites.
